Our hands-on workshops give secondary students the opportunity to build new skills and develop a deeper understanding of a subject.


Students will engage with academic staff and learn with industry standard equipment and processes. The workshops, which are based on the latest curriculum framework, run during school hours at our Perth campus. Some workshops can also be brought to your school upon request.

    Forest, Earth, and Fire: The politics of climate change in Indonesia Lecture Projections suggest that Indonesia may be one of the first places in the world to be hit by catastrophic climate change. In this presentation, we look at the nexus between politics and climate change in our region. We consider how democratic as well as authoritarian systems can cause deforestation, how the orangutan is impacted by the supermarket, and we look at what has been controversially called the “infrastructural violence” of the plantation zone. We conclude by asking what can be done to protect forests, habitats and indigenous communities.

    Indonesia Rising? Threats and Opportunities in the Australian imagination Lecture It is sometimes said that no two neighbours are as different as Australia and Indonesia. In this presentation, we explore the major themes and controversies of the Australia-Indonesia relationship. We look at how, in Australia, Indonesia is often viewed through the lens of “threat” or “opportunity”. Similarly, we consider the rise of Islam in Indonesia via the concepts of “radical” and “moderate”. Finally, we ask how Australia might be impacted by the emergence in the future of Indonesia as a global economic powerhouse.

    Face in the Crowd: Facial reconstruction techniques in forensic science (Beginner) Facial reconstruction combines the principles of anatomy, osteology, anthropology and art to recreate a face from skeletal remains (the skull). It is often of assistance in police investigations to aid in identification of a victim.     Caught Red-Handed: Exploring simple bloodstains in forensic science Students will develop their scientific inquiry skills by investigating the factors that influence the appearance of blood stains. They will propose a hypothesis, undertake experimental work and analyse data to determine the relationship between the diameter of a bloodstain and the height of release.     A Bug’s Life: Exploring the lifecycles of insects and their use in forensic science  Students will explore the life cycles of different land and aquatic insects through game boards, and work collaboratively to match insect behaviours and lifespans to different insects. They will gain familiarity in handling fly larvae, understand how larvae are used in a forensic investigation and use simple models to predict the post mortem interval (PMI) or time since death of a victim based on insect evidence collected at the crime scene.     This interactive workshop uses right-brain writing techniques to help students generate creative stories and teaches tools to develop written work. Students will work with published writers to respond to each other’s ideas, problem-solve common story-writing pitfalls, and experiment with alternatives as they aim to produce engaging narratives. They will learn to give and respond to feedback from others, and use creative writing strategies that can be expanded and developed back in the classroom.

    Scriptwriting for Radio Writing for broadcast requires very different skills to writing for print or online publication. In this workshop, students will get a taste of writing material that’s suitable to be read aloud and consumed by listeners. They will learn the basics of scriptwriting then produce broadcast scripts of their own.     Recorded Interview workshop In this hands-on workshop students will use recording equipment to learn a variety of skills, from field recording to microphone levels and interview techniques. Students will work together to learn how to conduct an interesting and effective interview with little knowledge of a person and their area of interest. They will learn the difference between recording levels and monitoring (headphone) levels and the impact that location has on the quality of sound in an interview. They will come away with a recorded interview that will demonstrate their experience and familiarity with using relevant equipment to produce a recorded interview in the field. Media

    Editing Interviews in Adobe Audition In this workshop students will learn the fundamental principles of a digital audio workstation and how to use Adobe Audition to edit a recorded interview. Using a pre-recorded interview, students will use Adobe Audition to add layers of audio to create a more interesting audio piece. This workshop will help students better understand the importance of the decisions they make in the field when recording the initial material.     Live-to-Air Broadcasting Watch your students become the stars of their own radio show as they learn to script, panel and record a 3-minute simulation of live-to-air radio. Students will use either a template script provided by Murdoch or their own script developed in the Scriptwriting for Radio workshop to learn the basics of presenting a radio show. This workshop will familiarise students with the terminology used in radio scripting and give them the opportunity to panel a radio desk and understand its functionality. Students will come away with a recorded piece that demonstrates their experience and familiarity with the live radio process in a real radio studio.     Adobe After Effects: Transparencies workshop Digital visual effects usually involve some form of compositing and After Effects is arguably the most widely used digital compositing tool for emerging filmmakers. In this workshop students will learn to make transparency areas in video planes and layer them for particular effect. Understanding and mastering this process includes learning Chroma-keying, masking, key frame animation and rotoscoping techniques.     Green screen/Chroma key Studio workshop The core of many visual effects seen in cinema and on television is the Chroma key. This process allows the filmmaker to make areas of video transparent, and it is how all virtual sets for news or entertainment shows are created. In this session students will learn the technical aspects of creating a good Chroma key environment, including complex aspects of Chroma key lighting, subject positioning, and exposing the shot.     Sound Mixing for Moving Images Sound design for film and television carries much of the narrative and guides the audience’s perception of character and mood. Music and sound effects, when synchronised with moving images, can change the meaning of images entirely. Choosing and balancing character dialogue, voiceover, sound effects and music allows for large or small manipulations to the story being told. In this session students will explore the possibilities of mixing different soundtrack elements for a short film. Media

    Interactive Sound for Games Game audio is integral to idea of immersion and playability of any video game. Thinking about how sound can be used at the design stage allows for a more immersive game experience. All game audio elements (shots, environments, dialogue, warning sounds and music) can be used interactively to adapt to the gameplay. In this session students will record original audio for use in a video game. Using interactive audio software they’ll create and modify existing sounds reacting to the gameplay to make the experience more immersive and lifelike. Music

    TV Studio: Live panel show From news to current affairs, panel shows like The Project and game shows like Family Feud, many of our favourite shows are filmed live in a TV studio environment. In this session students will learn the technical aspects of operating a TV studio, including the specific roles found on the studio floor (camera, lighting, floor manager, presenter, talent) and in the control room (director, switcher, sound, auto prompt, video playback). They will work as a team to create a 5-minute live panel show, complete with titles, music and video.     3D Video/Stereoscopy workshop Filmmakers have been creating stereo moving images for entertainment for more than 60 years, though James Cameron’s Avatar is probably the best known 3D film made to date. Making 3D images is not overly complex, but it takes some understanding of the mechanics and supporting theory to get it looking great and use it to maximum effect.
    In this workshop students will learn the practical process of creating 3D video using cheap anaglyph glasses, a DSLR camera and free software. With this knowledge, students can continue experimenting with 3D images in their own time. You may also be interested in an extension of this workshop, which includes a seminar on perspective theory and more detailed information about 3D video technicalities.

    Character Animation Have you ever wanted to show your students how animated films are made? How the characters from their favourite films are brought to life with personality and emotion so real they find themselves empathising with them? In this Character Animation workshop, taught by industry professionals using state of the art software Autodesk Maya, students will learn how to create their very own 3D character animation.
    This class has been designed for beginners in an easy to understand format. Students will follow along at their own speed to a video tutorial specially designed for secondary schools students. The class will also receive one-on-one help from a tutor who will assist them and answer questions. At the end of the 1-hour session students will leave with all of the animation files, as well as a movie file of the beautifully animated character on a USB, so they can show off their creation to friends and family.

    Digital Painting Our modern world of visual art is bursting at the seams with digital paintings. From painterly looks to heavily stylised images, digital painting offers the full range of expression at a fraction of the time it would take to complete a traditional painting. In visual media industries, digital painting is an important part of the creative process – either for its own sake or as part of a larger production such as a film or a video game.
    In this workshop students will learn the basics of that creative process using industry based techniques in Photoshop to bring their very own video game character to life as a digital painting. Using Wacom Cintiq tablets and starting with a blank canvas, students will explore the shapes and ideas that feel right for their own personal design and develop these ideas into a character of their own creation with its own look and personality, which they can save and keep. This workshop is aimed at artists of all levels of experience and capability.

    Unity Level 1: Introduction Do your students have the ideas to create video games but lack the know-how? This workshop is for you. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of the Unity game engine, which is free to use and allows anyone to make their very own games. Your students will learn how to use the Unity interface to create and manipulate a game scene and begin to explore what’s possible with the tools to bring their game ideas to life.
    On completion of the session, students will have created their own simple, customised game which they can save and keep, plus firsthand experience in the setup of all the moving parts of a game, including different types of objects, controlling the game camera, sound and lighting.
    This workshop is aimed at game creators who have little or no experience with Unity.

    Low Poly Portraits Low polygon, or low poly effects and patterns are used in almost all visual communication fields today, from interior design and graphic design to web design and interface design. The low poly effect turns complex surfaces into simplified faceted 3D forms. Apart from being on trend, the low poly effect helps students to think about the underlying structure and forms of surfaces and objects. Students will use images of animals, humans or themselves to create a low poly portrait using Adobe Illustrator. Once the technique is learnt, it can be applied to a variety of potential projects.     Masks, Masquerades and Fakes How images and text communicate when placed together is at the heart of visual communication. From website landing pages to Facebook jokes and Instagram cartoons, the way we combine images with text to communicate a message is vital to digital and print communication. This workshop engages combinations of images and text as a way to communicate a message using Adobe Photoshop. Students will be provided a brief introduction to understand Roland Barthes’ idea about the use of text and its ability to anchor the meaning of image.     Poster Design using the Golden Ratio The Golden Ratio has been used in human art and design for at least 4000 years. Greek architecture used the Golden Ratio to give the forms and spaces of its columns a pleasing composition. The poster and book compositions of the Swiss International Style were also famous for reintroducing the Golden Ratio to its strict grid layouts. In this workshop students will first learn some of the principles of the Golden Ratio and then, using either Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, build a Golden Ratio which can be used as a template to control the layout of elements in a poster.     Redesigning Portfolios Grids are the basis for most graphic design layouts. Grids help to define proportions, keep content organised and help the reader navigate content. The Golden Ratio is directly related to the Rule of Thirds, which can become the foundation for a grid system. Exploring alternative grid layouts in relation to meaningful content helps students to build coherent layouts that are aesthetically and conceptually appealing. This workshop guides students through the use of grids and their basic purpose. Students will then build a grid in Adobe InDesign and apply an appropriate grid layout to an existing portfolio page.     3D Modelling While playing your favourite video games you will often stumble across interesting props and gadgets required to finish the game. An “asset” in video game production is anything that needs to be created by the artist. This could be a prop model, character, animation or even a sound effect. In this workshop students will learn how to model props for a video game utilising industry software Autodesk Maya. This lesson covers planning, using reference, 3D deformation and rendering techniques. These techniques are the foundation of asset generation for building environments and character creation in 3D games. At the end of the class your students will have their own rendered masterpiece of the prop they created, as well as a better understanding of the requirements of asset generation.     Violent Offenders

    High risk violent offenders cause the greatest harm to the community.  These individuals generally start offending at a young age, and continue offending into later ages.  These individuals are only a very small proportion of offenders (around 6%) but they account for 70% of violent crime.  We also hear that violent crime is increasing and out of control. 
    In this class, students will learn about the nature of violent offending and the psychology of high risk violent offenders.  We will answer the questions about the level of violent crime.  We will also look at who is most likely to be a victim of violent crime and where these crimes are committed.  The class will also cover the psychology of violent offenders, that is, an examination of the psychological characteristics of violent offenders.

    False Confessions

    Most people believe that no-one would confess to a crime they did not commit, especially a serious crime such as murder. Well, one of the first recorded false confessions was by a woman and one of her servants who confessed to murdering her husband. They were both executed. When her husband came back from the crusades you can understand that he was not very happy!!
    In the Name of the Father is a movie about the Guildford Four. In this class we will examine some very famous false confessions including the Guildford four, the Birmingham six and the case of Andrew Mallard. Andrew was convicted of a murder he did not commit and his “confession” was the major evidence used to get his conviction. We will examine why and how certain police interrogation tactics lead to such false confessions, focussing especially on Andrew Mallard’s case.
    Guy Hall was the expert witness for the defence who analysed the police interrogation and in this workshop he will go through his analysis.

    How to Burglar Proof Your Home This session helps students understand the non-random patterns associated with residential burglary. Because this crime is predictable and offenders choose targets in a consistent manner, there are things that can be done to reduce the likelihood of a house becoming a residential burglary target. This talk will outline the types of things that homeowners can do to reduce risk and also give students a chance to reflect on the types of protection they could implement in their own homes.
    At the end of the workshop students will leave with a checklist they can use to assess their own houses and also a list of crime prevention contacts they can use to engage with this issue and reduce crime where they live.

    Who Owns the Moon?
    There are a lot of common misconceptions regarding the study of law. Many see lawyers only as court room advocates and do not realise the amount of creative, lateral and deeply profound thinking that is required in legal work. This workshop is designed to break those misconceptions and expose students to the fact there is a legal aspect in absolutely everything, including in outer-space. 
    ‘Who Owns the Moon’ is an interactive lecture that guides students through the complexities of the laws of outer space. Students are challenged with legal questions regarding property ownership and are exposed to the legal thinking behind concepts they have never considered before. The presentation emphasises the formative influence law has on our future; students are asked to express their ideas about where the law should go to ensure fairness and justice for all.

    Student Ambassador Mock Trial
    An interactive event using Murdoch University Law Students as they practice to compete in a variety of legal competitions. The mock trial will convene with Murdoch University undergraduate students acting in positions of Prosecution, Defence and Judge. From there, students from your school will be selected to be the jury and other positions in the courtroom. Within this event, students will not just witness a court proceeding in action, but also take part and understand how their actions as members of the court are able to influence the Australian Judicial System.

    Internet of Things Lab In the future even small everyday objects will be internet connected and will interact with each other in a variety of ways. With a greater understanding of environmental effects, buildings will adjust heating, cooling, fans, lighting and windows to save power. Reticulation may operate based on soil moisture levels and cars may self-report potholes to councils and maintenance work to the service centre. In our introduction to the Internet of Things, we will use a Raspberry Pi to prototype a Simple IoT system.     Angklung Ensemble The Angklung is a musical instrument that originated in today’s Indonesia, but is popular throughout South-East Asia. Made from bamboo tubes carved to have a resonant pitch and tuned to octaves, the Angklung is played in ensembles of three or more players.     Batik Originating in Java, Batik is the ancient tradition of decorating cloth using wax and dye. The technique of using the wax to select and block out areas on cloth which is then dyed has long been used to form creative and intricate textile designs. In this workshop, students will learn about the history of batik and develop an understanding of the tools, differing types of batik and the significance of pattern.     Gamelan Orchestra Gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Java and Bali. Gamelans have a long history in Indonesia and feature a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, kendang (drums) and gongs, bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings. In May 1993, the Provincial Government and people of East Java presented a handcrafted, 80-piece Gamelan orchestra to the government and people of Western Australia. That Gamelan Orchestra is housed at Murdoch University in the Peace Pavilion.     Poco-Poco Dance The Poco-Poco dance is a popular line dance which originally comes from the Minahasa in Sulawesi. It has been popular throughout Indonesia since the 1990s and has been integrated into aerobic exercise classes and dance schools. As a marketer your job could involve understanding consumers and how they behave, developing new products or deciding the best way to distribute a product and how much to sell it for. 
    Our fun, interactive marketing workshops give students a taste of the typical activities undertaken by marketers. By the end, students will have a better understanding of why they might choose Apple over Samsung. They will never look at an advertisement, Facebook promotion or supermarket in the same way!
